HUGHES, Joseph Stuart Gordon (1857-1918)
Born on 20 January 1857 at Eccles House, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire, England, the first son of Daniel Hughes, paper manufacturer, and his wife Millie, nee Gordon. He appears in Halifax directories for a couple of years from 1878 as a machinist. He then moved the U.S.A. He married on 26 September 1885 at the Church of England, Halifax, Halifax County, Nova Scotia to Celia Ann Mancell, daughter of A. Walter Mancell, solicitor, and his wife Celia, nee Hamilton. Worked for Major John S. Koster for many years, firstly in Nova Scotia and later in the pulp works of the Herkimer Paper Company in Kosterville, New York. Partner with John T. Horton in the Lowville Iron Works, New York from c1887 to 1893. Returned to Nova Scotia in 1893 to start up the Morgan Falls Pulp Mills in partnership with Alfred G. Jones and sons. He appears in the 1901 census at Chesley Corner, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia with his wife and family. This shows his wife as Celia Ann Hughes (born 2 January 1856 in England) and children: Edith Hamilton Hughes (born 9 October 1886 in U.S.A.); Walter Gordon Hughes (born 8 May 1888 in U.S.A.); Elinor Mancell Hughes (born 15 September 1889 in U.S.A.) and Celia Mabel Hughes (born 31 March 1897 in Nova Scotia). Died on 23 October 1918 at Yarmouth, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Buried c25 October 1918 at Bedford, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada.
JONES, Alfred Gilpin (1824-1906)
Born on 28 September 1824 at Weymouth, Digby County, Nova Scotia the son of Guy Carleton Jones and his wife Frances, nee Jones. Educated in Weymouth and at the Yarmouth Academy, Nova Scotia. He married firstly on 17 July 1850 at Halifax, Nova Scotia to Margaret Wiseman Stairs. He married secondly on 5 April 1877 to Emma Albro. Member of Parliament from 1867 to 1872 and 1874 to 1878. West India Merchant in 1881. He and his sons were partners with Joseph Stuart Gordon Hughes in the construction and running of the Morgan Falls Pulp Mills at New Germany, Nova Scotia from 1893 onwards. Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia from 26 July 1900 till his death. Died 15 March 1906 in Nova Scotia.
