HUGHES, Daniel (c1825-1891)

Born c1825 and baptised on 16 March 1825 at St. George's Church of England, Bolton, Lancashire, England, the son of Joseph Hughes, paper manufacturer, and his wife Mary, nee Grime. Worked at the White Hall Paper Mill at Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire, England. He married on 2 January 1856 at the Ballycarry Presbyterian Church, Templecorran, County Antrim, Ireland to Millie Gordon, daughter of Samuel James Gordon, attorney, and his wife Maria, nee Holmes. Following the sale of the White Hall Paper Mill he and his family migrated to Quebec, Canada in October 1870 per the Montreal Ocean Steam-Ship Company's ship, the "Scandinavian." At the Penobsquis Paper Mill, from late 1870. Within a few years he moved to Nova Scotia and took over the running of the Acadia Paper Mill at Bedford, near Halifax, Nova Scotia. After this mill burned down he moved into Halifax where he worked as a clerk; bookkeeper and later as the law librarian at Dalhousie College. Died on 4 September 1891 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Buried on 5 September 1891 at (All Saints' Cemetery, cnr. Perth & Waldour Street?) Bedford, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada.
