HUGHES, Robert (1820-1878)
Born 1820 and baptised on 25 December 1820 at St. Matthew's Church of England, Little Lever, Lancashire, England, the son of Daniel Hughes, paper manufacturer, and his wife Ellen, nee Fryer. Paper Dealer at Exchange Street East, Bolton in 1851. Appointed as an Overseer for Little Lever in March 1851. Married on 16 September 1852 at the Addingham Parish Church, Yorkshire, England to Isabella Smith, only daughter of William Smith, cotton manufacturer, and his wife Hannah, nee Guyer. At Castleton Paper Mill, Sudden, near Rochdale in 1860. Partner with John Riley as papermakers in 1860. Paper Dealer at 9 & 11 Bank Street, Bolton in 1874. Died on 14 June 1878 at the Hydropathic Institution, 10 Leicester Street, Southport, Lancashire, England. Buried on 17 June 1878 at the Rochdale Cemetery, Lancashire, England.
RILEY, John (c1822-1869)
Born c1822 in Rochdale, Lancashire, England. Married in 1843 at Rochdale, Lancashire, England to Elizabeth Metcalf(e). Had a variety of occupations including spring and doffing plate maker, paper maker, and waste dealer. Partner with Robert Hughes as papermakers in 1860. Died on 21 June 1869 at Mere Lane, Rochdale, Lancashire, England.
